Human Resources
When your vision is to be the nation's finest university, you can't realize it without a talented and diverse team of human resources professionals serving as strategic business partners. As a member of Penn State's human resources community, you can play an active role in helping Pennsylvania's largest non-governmental employer align its 33,000 people with its challenging missions and goals.
As human resources professionals, we proactively take on modern challenges facing employers nationwide. On any given day, you can take a walk through our offices and hear vocabulary such as "baby boom retirement crisis," "affordable healthcare," and "work/life balance." Our human resources professionals serve as valuable internal consultants who help Penn State attract, develop, and retain a talented, competitive, and diverse workforce.
Penn State maintains a dual approach to human resource management. At the Office of Human Resources, our centralized hub of human resource activity, teams come together to develop visions and create policies that position Penn State as a national-level employer of choice. Staff members in the Office of Human Resources have the opportunity to build expertise and develop strategy in specific specialties, such as recruitment, benefits, labor relations, health promotion, professional development, and more. This centralized office is complemented by a network of human resources managers dispersed among each of the University's colleges and administrative units. Human resources professionals in these offices serve as front-line resources for vice presidents, deans, departmental leaders, and faculty and staff of all levels. Never the same day twice, their time is spent managing across-the-board human resources topics and issues.
We not only actively develop our own career paths, but also help build paths for future members of the human resources profession. Over the years, Penn State's human resources professionals have served as guiding mentors for hundreds of students enrolled in the University's many people-management majors. Our team members are also actively involved in many national, regional, and local professional organizations, including the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR).
